LINKING EMERGENCY AID TO FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY

INTRODUCTION

The course will explore how to bridge the gap between emergency assistance and developmental food and livelihood security support. It is targeted at professionals from the field of food and nutrition security, responsible for emergency planning. Highly skilled experts will facilitate the course to ensure participants learn to make use of theoretical and conceptual thinking on food and nutrition security.

It is designed to encourage people to build a better life and prevent them from falling back into avoidable situations where they need assistance again

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course the participants will be able to:

v  Understand classification of emergencies in particular famine and food crises. Food insecurity and malnutrition and how these have shaped operational response and practice.

v  Explore food and nutrition security context with the use of frameworks.

v  Use quantitative and qualitative methods to assess and monitor the food and nutrition security situations.

v  Study concepts of vulnerability, power, and gender in relation to emergencies and food and nutrition security.

v  Explore the links between relief and development.

v  Assess multi-stakeholder processes in relation to advocacy and change.  

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is intended for various actors in Agriculture Extension (Agricultural extension officers, senior agricultural officials and policy makers) working with communities, in governments, funding agencies, Research organizations and non-government organizations among others for Agriculture support activities and other Development programmes.

Module 1:  Basic Concepts in Food and Nutrition Security Emergencies

v  Transition from food aid induced dependency towards building resilience and sustainable livelihoods

v  Food system resilience and indicators

Module 2: Food Security Analysis Frameworks

v  Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Analysis (CFSVA),

v  Emergency Food Security Assessment (EFSA)

v  Joint Assessment Missions (JAM),

v  Crop and Food Supply Missions (CFSAM)

v  Nutritional surveys

Module 3: Data Collection and Analysis of Food and Nutrition Security

v  Collecting food data from households

v  Indicators of food and nutrition security

v  Calculating Indicators

v  Using indicators of food and nutrition security

Module 4: GIS and Remote Sensing Application in Food and Nutrition Security Analysis

v  Data collection

v  Reporting food security information using GIS

v  Food security early warning systems and disaster monitoring

v  Population targeting with GIS and remote sensing

v  Communicating food security information with GIS and remote sensing

Module 5: Food Aid and its Role in Nutrition Emergencies

v  What is food aid?

v  Benefits and problems with food aid

v  Link between relief and development: humanitarian, transitional and development food assistance

Module 6: Cross-cutting issues in Maintaining Food and Nutrition Security in Emergencies

v  Nutrition security and health

v  Vulnerability of smallholder rural households to food insecurity

v  Multi-stakeholder processes in relation to advocacy and change

v  Participatory approaches to restore food security in emergencies

v  Role of power, gender and the rural poor in food and nutrition security

v  Role of ICT in responding to nutrition emergencies

v  Monitoring and evaluation to enhance food security

REQUIREMENTS

Participants should be reasonably proficient in English. Applicants must live up to Afriex Training Ltd admission criteria.

METHODOLOGY

This course will utilize a variety of proven adult learning techniques to ensure maximum understanding, comprehension and retention of the information presented
