INTRODUCTION

This five day course is aimed at strengthening participants’ knowledge and skills related to the use of software applications to investigate communicable disease outbreaks.

DURATION

5 days.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is open to all researchers and health practitioners with interest in the application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) within healthcare.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, the participants should be able to;

v To create an electronic  entry form from a paper questionnaire

v To enter merge, validate and clean data, manage datasets

v To create epidemic curves and work with dates and times in Epidata or Excel

v To map epidemiological data

v To calculate study power and sample size for various study designs

v To randomly select controls

v To carry out analysis for cohort and case-control studies, including stratified and multivariable analysis

v To produce a report of the outbreak study, interpreting results of the various analyses.

COURSE OUTLINE

v Introduction to outbreak investigation, cohort and case-control studies

v Creation of a questionnaire

v Data entry and validation using EpiData

v Descriptive analysis of epidemiological data using Excel/Stata

v Time series analysis; epidemic curve using Excel/Stata

v Analysis of place characteristics ;mapping of cases using QGIS

v Bivariate analysis of epidemiological data using Stata

METHODOLOGY

This course is delivered by our seasoned trainers who have vast experience as expert professionals in the respective fields of practice. The course is taught through a mix of practical activities, theory, group works and case studies.

Training manuals and additional reference materials are provided to the participants.
